Having a courageous conversation about race with people is challenging for them because many get nervous about saying the wrong thing and are maybe scared of being judge making difficult to talk about a topic like this. I feel like when we talk about race we think twice about what we’re going to say to make sure it doesn’t sound mean or like you're targeting a certain race that’s why most of the time, people have trouble explaining themselves when they want to say something. Most times when I hear a person talk, they don’t seem confident in themselves in the way they talk. When we do get engaged into a courageous conversation about race and have a lot to say we tend to speak our mind. I haven’t really seen anyone be fully engaged into the conversation of race. When I say fully engaged I mean speaking our truth, what we believe or think. It would be much easier to say what you think without be nervous and to be confident you believe in not being afraid of people looking at you with that judgment.
This is my first time actually learning about the different races and other information that contribute to that in class. Having a courageous conversation helps get people’s perspective about race whether they care or find the topic not important to talk about. Talking about race is important in today’s society still. I believe this because there’s still people out there that are in knowledge about the white privilege and take advantage of it. This still exists today. Racism also exists in today's society of course not as it was before , but there's still people who are racist. For example cops would most likely pull over a person of color to check them rather than a white person. I’m sure there are more examples. I got this example from the Inequality lesson we had. I learned a lot about the different races and how they were treated.
I feel like many racial preference has to do with how media shapes society. The majority of the shows in the country have mostly caucasian characters, Yes there is Latino, African American, or Asians characters, but you often see white people. Racial preference can also deal with economic distinguishment. Many people when you t
Something that really stood out to me was the voting act on Black people. The act was that if a Black male had a grandfather that did not vote before them then they could not vote. It stood out to me because that means that Black males couldn’t to vote in any way. That is because Black males weren’t allowed to vote back then in 1865 when . In a way it was a smart plan for the white people to have no votes from them. Another piece of information that stood up to me was that Asian people were also mistreated. They were discriminated and attacked as well. I didn’t know some people wanted Asians out of the country.
As a class we have grown on not judging people's truths or being disrespectful in any way. Listening to the students on what they have to say of the topic has not really been difficult because everyone is being quiet and listening. If anyone had something to say that would’ve been kinda disrespectful I would imagine no one would say anything, but they would be thinking of what they would’ve respond to the comment. Something that we can change could be, being more open and share our thoughts no matter if they might be offending to a person. We could still speak our minds in a respectful way without offending others in class that might or might not agree with you.
My experience with learning about different races has never made me feel uncomfortable talking with the class. I have no racial preference for any type of people I, although my IAT test of race came out to be a slightly preference for white people. I thought my test would’ve been no preference for a racial group because I truly believe that I don’t see anyone who is better than the other or feel “ safer” with a specific racial group. I see everyone equal as human beings. Yes, they are different colors and have different cultures, but other than that, in my eyes I see everyone equal. I appreciate the differences in the world, learning about different foods, music, style that ties back to a certain racial group of people.
People who have preference for caucasians might feel like this because they are probably surrounded by the majority of caucasians and in their eyes they feel more comfortable to be with. Racial preference also has to do with media. Most T.V channels you see have only white people. There isn’t a lot of shows that have Latinos, African American and/or Asians.I feel like there should be many shows with different types of people. This could be a reason why some people can have a racial preference for caucasians. Many people think or have slightly preference for caucasians because money can play in their choice. What I mean by this is many people believe only caucasians have money and other racial groups don’t have that much. Either way that plays into stereotype.
Stereotypes can make people very upset or just embarrassed. An example of stereotypes of different racial groups are that Asians are horrible drivers or they can’t see, Black people love chicken, all Hispanics jump the border, or White people can’t dance. It can be embarrassing to see people from other racial group trying to dress or express a different culture. Making fun of someone's culture can be upsetting to a person who doesn’t like people looking at someone else trying to look like a different person and making something fun out of it.
When I went to Brookdale and Cal state San Marcos I had similar and different opinions said by the elder lady and students. I can’t remember the names of the people I got to interview. The first time I got to interview the lady, she was not racist, but according to her parents they were. The parents wouldn’t let her date a person who is not caucasians. They were bias against many racial groups. So she decided to leave where she lived which was in Boston and dated a guy who was Italian. The students at Cal state were also not racist and believed one day everyone will have respect for people and not be racist because there's less racism and the younger generation will have different thoughts than the people from before. I also agree with what they said.
